Is it necessary for colleges and universities to monitor the actions and/or speech of students? I don’t think that colleges and universities should be responsible for monitoring the behavior and speech of its students. College is not a place where babysitting should be necessary, so the monitoring of behavior is unnecessary. But I do think that colleges and universities should have a clear and concise handbook which states what is appropriate and acceptable at school, and if one those rules or policies are broken then appropriate disciplinary actions need to be enforced. And upon review of the incidents they need to be dealt with accordingly, but there is no way or reason that colleges and universities should have to monitor the behavior and speech of students.
Should standards be higher for professional and graduate students? I think that standards should be higher for professional and graduate students. If you are a professional in your chosen career path it is not acceptable for you to act juvenile and to have to have constant monitoring of your behavior. As a graduate student you should have already experienced the joys and immaturity of an undergraduate student, and therefore at this point constant supervision shouldn’t be necessary. With age comes growth and experience, so as a person matures more is expected of them, while requiring less from other people. As professionals and graduate students they are still entitled to make mistakes like everyone else, but with the standards that come along with their titles they do have to expect different consequences.
